Is Pine Sol Good For Hardwood Floors?

Can you use pine sol on hardwood floors? The short answer is Yes, but you will need to keep some certain information in mind in order to protect your floors and get the best results out of this product.

There are two types of hardwood floors that are used widely: engineered hardwood and solid hardwood. After testing the chemical on two types of them, we can confidently say that the components of Pine-Sol are safe for both solid and engineered!

Moreover, this cleaner will be safest for the engineered one due to its higher durability of structure compared with the other one.

How To Clean Hardwood Floors With Pine-Sol?

Step 1: Prepare the Cleaning Tools

Before cleaning, you should prepare all the necessary tools to take less time and effort while cleaning. In general, this task does not require you anything special but the daily cleaning tools. Here are the things you will need:

  • A bucket
  • Mild cleaning product (optional)
  • Soft sponge (in case your floor has strong grease)
  • A cloth-head mop
  • Pine-Sol
  • Vacuum/ Mop
  • Hand gears (optional, but suggested to have if you use the sponge to clean strong dirt and grease)

Step 2: Keep Your Children and Pets out of the Cleaning Area

Even though this product is good for cleaning, it contains toxic chemicals that can be harmful to both humans’ and animals’ health. For this reason, you should keep children and pets out of the cleaning area and only let them out when the cleaning process is 100% finished.

If you have a toddler or a child who likes to suck their fingers, you will need to ensure a thorough clean for the floors without any Pine-Sol left. Specifically, this is to prevent the kids from unknowingly touching and licking the Pine-Sol.

Step 3: Sweep or Vacuum Your Hardwood Floors

You can use a mop or a vacuum to get rid of all the loose debris, dirt, hair, or sand before cleaning for the best result. Do not forget to also remove the dirt under the bed, furniture, and carpet.

Step 4: Create a Pine-Sol Mixture

Pour a gallon of water on a bucket, then and around ¼ cup of Pine-Sol into the water. Carefully mix them until they are completely diluted.

Step 5: Clean the Floors with Pine-Sol Mixture

Now, soak the cloth-head mop into the bucket, and wring it out to remove the solution excess so there will be not too much Pine-Sol mixture on the floors while cleaning. You can repeat this step a few times until the whole surface, and all the dirt is completely removed.

Step 6: Clean the Tough Grease (if any)

In case there is hard-to-clean grease and dirt on the hardwood floors, you will need to use pure Pine-Sol to clean them. To protect your hand, we highly recommend you to use hand gears while cleaning.

Now soak the soft sponge into Pine-Sol, apply the solution on the grease, then gently move it back and forth to get rid of the grease. We suggest you use a soft, not a hard sponge or steel wool as they can leave scratches on the floors

Step 7: Clean the Floors with Clean Water

After finishing cleaning the whole surface, it’s time to clean the floors with clean water. As we mentioned above, this cleaner is especially harmful to children and pets, so you will need to clean the solution away carefully.

Step 8: Dry the Excess Water

To give the floors the best look, you can remove all the excess water with a dry cloth-head mop or a towel.

Precautions – What to Look out for When Using Pine-Sol?

As Pine-Sol is not a completely harmless product, make sure that you are always aware of these precautions while using it:

  • Avoid Using Pure Pine-Sol As Much As You Can

It would be best if you only used undiluted Pine-Sol when the grease is super hard to clean, as this product is not made for use in concentrated form.

If you want to prevent streaks after cleaning, you need to pool the water away as much as possible.

  • Consider Whether to Use It If You Really Love the Environment
